Say Hello To Pomelos

As we’re nearing the mid-autumn festival in Malaysia, you will probably see more of these fruits popping up around town. Pomelos are considered the ancestors of the grapefruit. They taste sweet and slightly sour too. It’s said that pomelos are a lucky fruit because they’re believed to be one of the Moon Goddess’ favourite fruits. However, luck isn’t the only magical thing about this fruit. Due to it being rich in nutrients and minerals, pomelos can aid in fighting urinary tract infections, reducing chances of cancer, and improve the overall health of the heart. So, what can you do with this exotic lucky fruit? Here are a few things you could try!

A tangy fix

Family gatherings are a must during festive seasons and we always want them to go smoothly. When they don’t, we tend to get stressed out. Loosen up and enjoy family time with a cold, refreshing glass of pomelo margarita. It’ll get you back in the groove of things and feel more relaxed. Here’s what you’ll need to make this thirst-quenching drink!


3 tablespoons blanco or reposado tequila

1 ½ tablespoon clear orange liqueur

3 tablespoons fresh pomelo juice

1 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 tablespoons simple syrup

1 pomelo wedge

First, grab a cocktail mixer, then add in the tequila, orange liqueur, pomelo juice, lime juice and simple syrup. Throw some ice into the cocktail shaker; cover and shake vigorously. Strain the mix into a chilled glass filled with fresh ice and garnish with a pomelo wedge. Now, you’re ready to get back out there!

Zesty Beans

Finding something that everyone eats is a tough task, especially when it comes to greens. Luckily, we’ve got just the recipe for you! Pomelo green beans is a take on a classic but with extra zest added to it. The pomelos give it a sweeter taste, making it easier for the kids to enjoy. What you’ll need includes:


6 cloves of garlic, peeled

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt

1/2 cup toasted walnut halves

1 pound green beans, trimmed

1 cup of pomelo segments

1 tablespoon oregano

1 tablespoon chives

First off, boil a large pot of water with salt, and cook the garlic cloves for about ten minutes. Then, remove the garlic with a strainer and transfer to a pestle and mortar. Next, add in 5 walnut halves, salt, oregano, and chives and mash them into a paste. Add in the olive oil gradually until the consistency is to your liking. Taste and adjust with more salt, if needed.

Next up are the beans. Cook them in the boiling water for about a minute or so, until they turn bright. Once they’re done, drain, and transfer to a bowl along with the garlic-walnut dressing.

Toss them well before adding in the pomelo, radicchio, and remaining walnuts. Give it all a final toss then it’s ready!

A bowl of luck

After any warm hearty meal, the best thing to enjoy is some sweet, sweet dessert. End the feast with a cool bowl of Mango Pomelo Sago, the dessert we all know and love with a mid-autumn twist! Here’s what you’ll need.


2 large ripe mangoes, peeled and cut into cubes

1 pomelo, peeled with sacs separated

3 tablespoons of pearl sago

200 ml santan

200 ml milk

Start by boiling the sago over medium heat in a pot of water for about 10 minutes. Make sure to constantly stir so that the sago doesn’t stick to the pot. Then, remove the pot and let the sago rest for 15 minutes with a lid on. Once that’s done, rinse the sago under cold water for about 1 minute before setting it aside. Next, add the milk, half of the pomelo, santan, and half of the mango cubes into a blender. Blend well until it reaches the consistency of a smoothie and refrigerate the mix for 15 minutes. Lastly, add the smoothie and sago in a bowl and top it all off with the remaining mangoes and pomelo. Give it all a good mix and enjoy!
